The UK is enjoying a glorious heatwave, and last week I took advantage of the warm weather and hosted a small, evening drinks party.
During the morning, having decided that the supermarket probably couldn’t supply my shopping list in full, I took a ten-minute drive to my local M & S food store (Marks and Spencer) where I purchased wine, nibbles and a few ingredients to make my canapés.
As it was such a bright clear morning, I took the scenic route across the top of Otley Chevin, and when passing ‘Surprise View’ carpark, I couldn’t resist stopping off for a little while to admire the magnificent views, right here on my doorstep.
If you have read the introduction to this photo challenge on our other site Weekly Prompts, you may have noted that I once asked my late husband for the meaning of the word Bucolic. His instant reply was “You’re living it!”
My little soiree was a success, and as it was a warm summer evening, we sat upstairs on the balcony or as my twenty-something son refers to it, the roof terrace. We enjoyed good food, good wine and good company with each of us taking great pleasure in watching the animals grazing in the fields below. My husband got it just right, I am living the life, the good life and I will be forever grateful.
And so… A taste of my Bucolic life…
The following poem by Christopher Marlowe (1564 – 1593) sums up Bucolic nicely.
- Come live with me and be my Love,
- And we will all the pleasures prove
- That hills and valleys, dale and field,
- And all the craggy mountains yield.
- There will we sit upon the rocks
- And see the shepherds feed their flocks,
- By shallow rivers, to whose falls
- Melodious birds sing madrigals.

The midweek word-prompt on our other site https://weeklyprompts.com is Subliminal, this is my response. The other day my youngest daughter Sophie whose eyesight isn’t brilliant when not wearing her glasses, exclaimed, “Mum I think you have a cow calving over there!” I looked at the cow and remarked, “That’s impossible she’s already got one!”Read more
The last week in May signalled the end of the weekly photo challenges and daily prompts, and like many bloggers, I was saddened and disappointed, but out of the ashes, a new idea was born!
GC and I decided to take our partnership in a new direction and together we created a new site and although in the development stage we welcome you to take part in our trial. Take a look https://weeklyprompts.com
To quote Gerry – The loss of this valuable platform caused many stalwart souls to think about ceasing their creative endeavors. This was a loss of talented people who had over the years honed their photographic and writing skills.
Our recently conceived site will attempt to fill that creative void which developed over the Word Press site’s discontinuation of that feature.
We heartily encourage you to write new posts or share your treasured photographs in reply to our Weekly Prompts. ~ GC
In the meantime please continue viewing some of my favourite photographs previously seen on this site.
