“What lies behind you and what lies in front of you, pales in comparison to what lies inside you.” (Ralph Waldo Emerson)
Emily’s ‘Love Story’ is the third in the collaboration series of stories written by myself and close friend Gerry Charb ( www.yournibblednews.com) Enjoy…
Emily, seated at her kitchen table, began to inspect the array of multi-coloured bottles. Bright Pink remained one of her favourites. But now it was time for a change, off with the pink and on with the red.
Emily painted her nails one by one, admiring the sheen and the warmth of the red as she went along. Sitting back on her cushioned kitchen chair she couldn’t help but approve of her strikingly finished nails.
Whenever her nails were freshly coated Emily would feel a sense of empowerment, it gave her permission to admire the way she looked. Watching herself in the mirror she considered her body carefully.
Emily recognised she had aged and was no longer the pretty young woman she once was, but she also acknowledged there was a certain beauty about her, an attractiveness she’d only recently begun to appreciate.
Looking at the colour red on her glossy manicured nails reminded Emily of her male friend. She gave a long soft sigh and began to think of Valentine’s Day and where their love affair began.
They had become friends before Valentine’s Day and it had surprised her to find she was often looking for him. They shared light hearted conversations and frequently enjoyed a joke or two together.
On Valentine’s Day she received his Valentine wishes. He didn’t try to hide his identity he was open and honest and waited for her to respond.
Emily’s heart skipped a beat, she hadn’t wanted to be with anyone preferring to live her life alone, therefore the developing feelings she had for this man was something she initially attempted to fight.
It was to be of no avail and during the subsequent few months their friendship blossomed into something deeper as he patiently taught her how to love again and gently showed her how much he cared.
Her adventure into unknown waters was both exciting and intimidating but she realised that her distant past had robbed her of some of the joys and opportunities that life offered others.
This is the continuing tale of Emily’s adventure into self-discovery and life.
It is also a reflective and speculative story about the way people grow in life.
