Bread and Butter

Qu’ils mangent de la brioche”, “Let them eat cake” misattributed to Marie Antoinette. Personally speaking, I think I’d prefer a chunk of bread and butter!

The other day daughter Sophie and I took an eight mile drive over to the little Spa town of Ilkley. We needed the bank because our local one had closed down.

As well as a branch of the bank, Ilkley has a number of decent shops, a few cafes and bars, and as pedestrians we enjoyed soaking up the atmosphere on The Grove. Plus it has the famous Bettys Tea Rooms and today Sophie wanted a treat.

IMG_4500Visitors to Yorkshire flock to Bettys for afternoon tea, morning coffee, or simply to try a selection of delights from the shop.

IMG_4503Today there was a queue to be seated and as we had an impatient two year old with us, we chose to buy our goodies from the shop and not stay for coffee.

IMG_4501I have to be honest, I can take or leave Bettys. I’ve never understood why people queue for a length of time  here, because quite frankly, they are a little overpriced.

IMG_4504I admit I can see the attraction, the display of cakes and treats is beautiful to behold, but for me it has to be the bread. I would take a plate of bread, cheese and pickles over a plate of cakes any day.

IMG_4508Outside the tea rooms, we stood on the pavement and listened to the sweet sound of  beautiful accordion music. Today it was taken from the Godfather trilogy and expertly played by Ginel, who kindly allowed me to take his photograph.

Ginel effortlessly playng his wonderful, almost elasticated accordion

A few doors down from the tea rooms is the posh doggy grooming parlour. Well, you can’t get much posher for dogs than Barbour!

  1. Did you not go on Ilkley moor ba tat?
Interesting tearoom. Do they actually serve tea? And what do you do if you’re a professional and want bread?
If that squashbox sounded as good as it looks, the music must have been delightful.

    1. Sorry, I clicked send by mistake. The view from Ilkley Moor is lovely.
Yes they have lovely tea rooms. I think there are six Bettys in total

You have to believe it the sound Ginel was making was really beautiful.

Love the photos. The settings in the photos bring back memories of a less rushed time and lifestyle. Great work Susan. Thanks for sharing. 🙂 Hugs always.
